Properly Serving Sparkling White Wines

When you plan to serve white wine with a meal, certain whites need to remain constantly chilled while at the table. It’s not very convenient to pour the wine, return to the kitchen, put it back in the refrigerator, and return to the table every time a glass needs to be refilled. Luckily, there’s a solution to this: the bucket.

The Importance of the Wine Bucket

Conveniently placed on or near the table, just fill with ice and add enough water to cover half of the bottle, place the wine bottle inside, and it will remain at the proper temperature for the duration of the meal.

Which Wines?

Wines that are suited to the ice bucket include:

  • Prosecco
  • Brut
  • Moscato
  • Rose
  • Champagne

Serving these wines at a slightly warmer temperature will not yield a pleasant taste.

Still whites (such as the Friulano or Ribolla Gialla mentioned above) should be served fresh but the bottles should not be exposed to icy temperatures.

Friuli and Other Northern Wines

Each region in Italy is known for its particular wines, as certain grapes need certain climates in order to grow well.

In the north, you’ll find that the climate renders some fabulous white wines, but don’t think that a tasty red can’t be produced in the areas that are farther away from the rains of the Eastern Dolomite mountain range.

Perhaps the most famous northern wine is the Prosecco; a sparkling white wine that is best known from Friuli’s neighboring region of Veneto. This is one of the most popular aperitivo (pre-dinner aperitif) drink choices and the base of many other delicious drink mixtures. Read more about such drinks and how to make them here.

Friuli region of special wines

In Friuli you’ll find some delicious whites, such as Friulano or Ribolla Gialla, which are excellent to accompany dishes that are fish-based or contain white meats. Popular reds include Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
